How do if fix my Goodmans digital terrestrial tv box GDB2?

The GDB2 box works perfectly when it is going, but frequently freezes up, leaving various "digital" patterns of brightly colored squares and lines on the screen.

It can only be re-started by switching off and then on. The box is in the open (i.e. cool).

It had previously been used with a tv with a picture fault, causing repeated blank screens, so may have received some spikes. Anyone familiar with this box behaviour who knows a specific cure? Or should I ditch it and fork out for a new one. Any help appreciated. Andy.

There is no need to wait for over-the-air engineering updates - simply download binary updates from:

http://gdb.freddys-utilities.co.uk/

And upload them using an serial cable to your PC.

The versions you can download and install support the 7-day EPG, and generally contain a number of fixes for the GDB2 box.

andy, don't buy another cheap dtt receiver, chances are you'll have the same problem. chaper boxes suffer from static build up, which causes the problems that you have encountered. BUY A SONY!

OK, have now tried updating all channels, and the software version, which I note is still at ver. 3.0. No joy. Terrible "coloured digital tearing" of the received vision persists. Interestingly, I note the updating images generated internally, were steady as a rock.

I think it could be a new box at Xmas! I think Currys do a basic one at about £34.99. I'll recheck the site too for cheap boxes. Thanks anyway, am grateful for your responses

OK, your prompt responses appreciated cobweb. Will give these a try.

PS. Your digital receiver box must be on a 'BBC digital channel' to recieve the update eg. BBC1, at the specified time. You can then force the update via an option in the set-up menu on your digital reciever.

NB: Newer boxes update automatically.

Check engineering software updates here..
http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/index.html

Each month, for each Manufacturer & for a limited period, Freeview updates it's software to improve service or remove software bugs. Some early boxes locked up on channel change through radio channels or on poor signal.

Don't know Goodmans box but worth checking your box is up to date on software before writing the box off.

Goodmans is usually a re-badge of another brand, you may need to check with the superstore you purchased the box off for the true origin of box manufacture.
