UPVC door lock wont work?

My upvc door won't lock from inside or out. The handle will lift up from inside which normally enables the lock to be turned by key, but it doesn't "clunk"/engage. therefore the key will not turn in the lock. My door is permanently unlocked at the moment, and so I do not feel safe with my 3 kids in the house!!

Please can anyone help?

ps, tried WD40!

It appears that our make of (safewear) hardware does not do a central gear box alone, it seems that we would need to buy the whole locking strip. Can you clarify!?
there seems to be lots of central gearboxes on the hardwear site, but none fron safewear!! Even googled it to no evail.

Looks like we may need to replace the whole lot after all!????

thankyou so much for all your help!!
We will look into gear box first then!

also you can buy a sash jammer for under a tenner (a movable lever) for extra security. i have them on my doors as i have small children. type `sash jammer` in the search box on the web site i mentioned and you will see what mean.
hope everthing goes well for you.

on the edge of the door (where the lock-strip is) there is a retaining screw directly in line with the key barrel. remove this, insert key and turn it to the 2o`clock or 11o`clock position and pull out.
remove the handles and then the lock-strip can be unscrewed, only remove the lock-strip retaining screws. once this is done simply slide the whole strip out.
the measurement from the edge of the strip to the centre of the spindle and from centre of spindle to centre of key barrel is important!
goto (upvc-hardware.co.uk) as this site shows you what to measure.
i still think it`s only the central gear-box that you need.

can you also advise us on how to remove the lock barrel!!!!

Ta!

thanks for your swift replys!

We have looked on the net, as money is tight! (hubby out of work!)
Found the whole device for 75 quid + free delivery.
It's the entire part that runs the full length of the door edge, is this correct? ( the part with all the hooks and bolts on etc)
He is going to try and replace the whole lot, except the lock barrel, so we can keep same keys.
Do you think this is the right thing to do (he will have help from his Dad!)

it`s a fault with your locking mechanism (lock-strip).
the central gear-box is the part that usually fails.
when you took the handles off and looked inside, that is the central gear-box. above and below the gear-box are two sliding strips (bars) which operate the locks. these are detachable from the gear-box.
there are many different lock-strips therefore many different gear-boxes.
a new gear-box ranges anywhere between £50-£100 on the internet.
getting the right gear-box is essential.
replacing a gear-box should really be done by a competant person who is familliar with upvc locking mechanisms.
is money tight and is there anyone who can help you?

I have tried alsorts!
With door open and handle 'up' nothing happens. When using the handle normally (down), only the latch operates. I have taken the handles off and looked inside, it appears that the part that works in conjuntion with the handle spindle to (operate the lock) is not working. I have applied WD40, which has done nothing. To me it seems to be something to do with the connection between handle spindle and locking spindle. I hope that makes some sense?

with your door open....... lift the handle to engage the locks and then turn your key.
if all the bolts and/or hooks engage and the key turns and locks then the door just needs adjusting.
do this and tell me what happens and i will help you further. give as much detail as possible
