drill too powerful?

i'm using a 500w B&D drill and I just want to tighten a screw into wood but

Most corded drills just have too much torque and speed to use as a driver without cam out.
Drill a pilot hole then use a screwdriver.

Most drills now have varialble speed control if yours has you are being too heavy with the switch, squeeze the trigger like you're squeezing a gun trigger. Don't pull squeeze. Persevere and practice you'll soon get used to the feel of it.
