Later model has two drawer type containers which slide open to reveal four AA batteries

This has been answered by a friend. Thanks.

Depends which model, there are two or four batteries, they are located in drawers underneath the unit.

The early model needs an electrical srewdriver, push back in the slot for both drawers and gently lever down.
The newer model has a clip either side that can be opened by hand.
