how can i fix a floppy door handle on my upvc dooor?

my door handle just flops up and down and is not moving the the mechanism in the door. Have removed the handle and the barrel just turns round. Cannot open door even though lock is working. Have had problems with door handle being stiff before and having to force handle up to shut it. Locksmith has replaced mechanism before and charged a fortune. Can anyone help?

just confirm to me that the spindle aperture (square hole) just turns around and that the handle is ok
