If you're using an email client like Outlook Express or Thunderbird, go into your account settings and select "Delete messages from server". Everytime you delete them from your computer, and then check for new emails, you're comparing what emails you have to what is available to download. If you're not deleting them from the server, then they will stay there and be ready to download again - and again.
