Check the steps one at the time and STOP when the problem is corrected:
Make sure that your speakers are plugged in, turned ON, and the volume set to a reasonable level.
You probably have powered speakers. They need to be plugged to the wall outlet. Check that they are realy plugged in. (they may have been unplugged by accident)
Click the sound icon in the notification area. Make sure that it's not muted or set to the minimum. Un-mute or adjust the volume as desired. (some applications affect that controll and never set it back to it's original setting on exit)
If you still don't have sound, doubleclick that icon.
The Wave control must NOT be muted. Place it's slider to at least 50%.
From the control pannel, start "Sound and audio periferals".
Sellect the Audio tab and click the topmost Advanced button.
On the Speakers tab, sellect the speaker configuration that apply to your case. It could be set to "No speaker".
On the material tab, you should see an entry for your audio card. Doubleclick that entry. A new dialog apears.
On the general tab, make sure that it's active. Set it to active if not.
LAST step:
Sellect the "Driver" tab and sellect "Update drivers..." and follow the on screen instructions.
