Right-click the desktop and sellect Properties...
(a faster way of going to your display settings)

1st choice:
Sellect the Apearance tab and increase the font size.
It will affect font size everywhere.

2nd choice:
On that same tab, click the Advanced button.
From here, you can sellect the font size individualy for each desktop element, like the icons, the title bar, the menus, the dialog boxes,...
It also offers you the option of sellecting customised colours if you wish.

3rd choice:
Sellect the Parameters tab and click the Advanced button.
On the general tab, you can change the DPI setting. You should have 3 choices, 2 preset DPI and personalised DPI.
It will affect about everything you see but the wallpaper will not change it's apearance.

pctech offered you a rather brute force and dumb way of acheiving your goal. A resolution of 800 by 600 is rather bad for your everydays use been to low, and you wanted only "a bit larger", not huge...
I realy don't recomend going under 1024 by 768. I always use 1600 by 1200 and adjust my font size to my liking.
