It depends how faulty the hard drive is. If it runs but has bad sectors, install it as a secondary drive (You may need to set the jumpers, but as you installed your new drive, I'll assume you know how to do that) and copy and paste what you need.
You can also find handy 'ide to usb' adaptors on ebay that will treat a hard drive as a mass storage device and let you have access to it without having to open your pc.
If the drive is undetectable, then I can't really help you. Try searching google for data recovery specaillists who will do this for you for a fee.
By the time you've done it, you'll be sick of people telling you that you should back up important files lol.
