Quake 1 is a DOS program and wont run all that well in native XP Emulation - you'll be better to recreate a DOS session and load Quake from there.

There is a program call DOSBOX thats very very good for retro gaming. It will allow you to run 95/98 and older games with ease! you can even turn down the running CPU speed.. sometimes if u dont the game is unplayable at high modern CPU frequencies.
