Windows xp professional. Control Panel. Add/Remove programs?

When I go into the add/remove programs I have LOADS of files marked Windows xp hotfix followed by a number. Do I need these,? can they be removed,? how did they get there,?

Or am I just stupid!.

You do need them. You should not delete them.
