Computer won`t respond to restore discs. Emachines 540 desktop?

Hi there. My elderly but reliable Emachines 540 started to play up. I decided to use the restore discs to get it back to "as new" set up. I`ve used the restore discs once before a few years ago without problems. This time, on inserting disc 1, all is well until after I get to the, press y to delete all data and start restore. Then I get the message "cannot open GHOSTERR TXT". I can only press OK, and the next message says "usage error 11030 ionvalid destination drive. Pressing OK again tells me that the drive has been restored, press any key to reboot. BUT, the drive hasn`t been restored and it goes back to a black screen saying no operating system found. Can anyone advise me of a solution to this problem while I still have some sanity left.

It sounds like you had a 'ghost' file of your operating system on your computer. that has been lost - so when you put your back-up discs (which only have your drivers and settings and files but no operating system) they have nowhere to go.

You will need the actual operating system disc and boot from the CD at the startup screen to reload an operating system back onto your computer (ie. windows XP disc )
