my junker gas water heater does not heat the water.

My gas heater keeps switching of (the pilot light is on and when it starts to heat water all of a suden the heater turns of for no reason the pilot light is off.
My gas heater is very simple Manual ignition no bateries
Does the gas regulater on the gas tank has to do with it.
