how to change a small radiator for a large radiator?

as i will have to extend the copper to house a longer radiator do i need to drain my entire water system?

Yes you will - don't bother with the freezing kits - they're rubbish.

If you have any skill in the matter and the rad is 1st floor, you could leave the downstairs rads full.
